Grinder of the Day

It's really not someone you'd expect. It's Joe Grech - but he's getting this trophy posthumously, I'm afraid. Down to 1,250 around level two, he's only just gone out this moment, having had, at last count half an hour ago, 1,300. Not known for such grindage - just check out prior GUKPTs etc. - the summer-shirted tournament veteran surprised us all by not just taking the brakes right off after a bad start.

On the table Grech just left, neighbours John Eames and Paul Dack just had a bit of a strange small blind vs. big blind pot. It folded to Eames, who looked in a raising mood. "Call - it's just easier," exhorted Dack, but Eames made it 800 which was called anyway. The flop didn't appear to interest either of them - Td-Ts-2c - but when Eames checked the 8c turn Dack bet 700. Call.
The river was the Qh. Eames checked a final time, and Dack bet 2,000. He thought, and thought, and thought, performing a nonstop dexterity show with his smallish chipstack. Finally, he made the call. Dack showed Qs Jd for the rivered 2pr, which was good.

It then suddenly occurred to me that the beaming Paul Dack looked quite a lot like this: a slightly insane looking Richard Attenborough.
