Walking through London's Victoria Casino, I have recently heard snatches of conversation in Norwegian, hastily hushed, but sinister in overtone... attempting to seamlessly blend in but incapable on a fundamental level due to their fondness for large baseball caps or effortlessly snappy dress bordering on the weird, they just can't mount a covert attack on the GUKPT effectively. Their polite manner combined with sometimes eye-opening playing style means that they'll always stick out, no matter how they try to say, "Oh, look over there!" while snapping up all the tournament monies...
Here are a few of them to watch out for if you're on your iphone and in the tournament:
Oyvind Efraimsen - you may recognise him from such educational updates as The Norwegian Open 2008 (although how much a large proportion of the field remember of the event is unclear). Just spotted in a confrontation with Kevin 'Lovejoy' O'Leary, folding to O'Leary's raise on a 9s-4d-2d flop saying, "Too early..."
Henning Granstad - seems to like UK events, especially the GUKPT. Experienced and a formidable opponent, also tried to convince me once that the Grebbestad holiday camp was the capital of Sweden.
This chap is listed as Stian Knutsen, and my attention was caught by his table as he scooped in a pot having shown down 7c-3c on the river which I think turned out to be a flush. "Ah-hah!" I thought to myself. I bet this guy is not too action-shy. Minutes later and there he went reraising Michael Greco out of the small blind to 550. Greco called and they saw a 3d-9h-5d flop. He bet out 800, called instantly by Greco. Both players checked the 3c turn. The 2s river, which looked like it wouldn't generate a big old 3,500 bet from Knutsen actually did. Greco considered but made the call - his young opponent instamucked and Greco won with his pocket Eights.
